Discussion Board Forum 1: Business Ethics The Volkswagen (VW) corporation experienced a major scandal after it conspired to manipulate data for diesel emissions. Business ethics, legal issues, and a Biblical worldview are common areas of failure and are clearly present in this case. Lippe (2015) stated that these acts were deliberate and examined the responsibility of legal counsel to mitigate such acts. If not for road testing by engineer, John German, excess emissions may not have been detected, and due to outcry, VW admitted to their technologically sophisticated fraud (Patra, 2016). God’s Word reveals, â€Å"But there is nothing covered up that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known† (Luke 12:2 New American Standard†¦show more content†¦Simply, the manger(s) should have conducted audits, supervised actions, and ensured the engineers followed the code of ethics to prevent this incident. Law â€Å"Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God† (Romans 13:1). This verse provides the spiritual rule, that when followed, prevents many negative incidents and their consequences. However, the engineers broke this command and made conscious decisions to design, develop, and produce vehicles that violated established law. In fact, the emissions produced were, â€Å"†¦as much as 40 times what is allowed by the U.S. standard defined by the Clean Air Act† (Mercuri Neumann, 2016, p. 24). Careful analysis of the corporate code of ethics, applicable laws, and Scripture provided clear solutions for managers to take to avoid these incidents. First, provide employees the code of ethics, train them to follow the codes, supervise the work of the engineers, and immediately correct violations. Second, take similar steps regarding the knowledge and application of law. Third, Christians must conduct themselves within the construct of God’s Word and these principles should provide an example for others to follow.
